North Carolina is a mid-Atlantic state, was one of the original 13 colonies, and was the site of the first English settlement in North America. Bordered to the east by the Atlantic Ocean, Tennessee to the west, Virginia to the north, and South Carolina and Georgia to the south, at 560 miles long, North Carolina is the longest state east of the Mississippi.

Agriculture has long been an important part of the economy of North Carolina. Tobacco, poultry and eggs, cattle, hogs, and soybeans are major export products.More recently information technology and biotechnology have contributed to the state's economic growth. The area between Raleigh and Durham, Research Triangle Park, is home to many high technology companies that take advantage of the proximity of research universities in the area.

North Carolina is divided into three distinct geographic regions: the Appalachian Mountains in the west, the Piedmont in the center, and the coast in the east. North Carolina MapEach region has its own climate: the mountains typically receive over 30 inches of snow in the winter with the summers being cool with low humidity. The central region is milder, with average winter temperatures in the 40s and summer temperatures in the upper 70s. The coast, warmed by the Gulf Stream, is considered humid subtropical, and has a more uniform temperature year-round.

North Carolina is home to several professional sports teams, including the Carolina Panthers (NFL), The Carolina Hurricanes (NHL), and the Charlotte Hornets (NBA); there is no professional major league baseball team in the state. The state is also home to many NASCAR racing teams.
